the Growth of Green Gram (Vigna radiata L.)

ABSTRACT
Pot culture experiments were conducted to evaluate the different types of water sources against green gram under in vitro condition. The river water, well water, pond water, Bore-well water, rain water, distilled water, mineral water, millipore water, reverse osmosis water and packaged drinking water were selected for the present study. The seedlings were raised in earthen pots and watered regularly. The results showed that the plant growth in terms of seedling height, fresh and dry weight was enhanced very significantly when watered with rain water followed by mineral water and it was least with well water and bore-well water. The packaged drinking water and reverse osmosis water followed by millipore water and distilled water were found to be moderate in promoting the plant growth. The same trend was noticed in the case of enumeration of microbial population and estimation of soil nutrients in soil samples irrigated with rain water. The present study indicated that rain water have more naturally available nutrients followed by mineral water that are supplemented with some synthetic nutrients which in turn are useful for the plant growth.
