ABSTRACT

Biodiesel production has received considerable attention in the recent past as a biodegradable and non polluting fuel. Alternative (Biodiesel) fuel plays an important role for the replacement of fossil fuel to eco-friendly fuel, which is produced from various plant oils like Cottonseed oil, Soybean oil, Jatropha oil, , Pongamia oil, Palm oil, Rapeseed oil, Castor oil, etc,. The enzymatic production of biodiesel by methanolysis of pongamia oil (Pongamia pinnatae) was studied using immobilized cells of Rhizopus oryzae. Immobilizations of biomass with calcium alginate were investigated for the methanolysis of pongamia oil. The stepwise addition of methanol found to reduce the inhibitory effects there by increasing the cost effectiveness of this process. This immobilized R. oryzae has many advantages compared with the other chemical processes, such as usage of a whole cell biocatalyst, reusability, low equipment cost, low production cost, which were very promising for biodiesel production in industrial scale.
