- An overview
Abstract
A stem cell is essentially the building block of the human body. Unlike a regular cell, which can only replicate to create more of its own kind of cell, a stem cell has the capability to renew itself for longer periods of time or become a specialized cell. Stem cell research and therapy is a promising advancement in medical science. The significance of stem cell therapy in modern medicine is that it offers hope in the treatment of incurable diseases like spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, aids, Parkinson's disease etc. The process of stem cell treatment is relatively simple. Stem cells are extracted from an embryo, an umbilical cord, blood or even bone marrow. They are the replicated in a cell culture.
