Abstract
Phytoremediation potential of Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in the treatment of tannery effluent was evaluated. Results indicate highly significant reduction in the levels of BOD, COD, TSS, TDS and chromium of the tannery effluent after 18 days of phytoremediation. Except for TDS and chromium, all other parameters of the phyto-remediated tannery effluent conform to TNPCB (2007) norms for effluent discharge. Chromium is highly toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic; phytoremediation enables the removal of chromium by 76.2%. Phytoremediation is a promising, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable technology for water sanitation and conservation. An integrated eco-friendly approach for tannery effluent treatment through water hyacinth based phytoremediation is envisaged as part of the environmental management and risk reduction strategy.
